Southern Ocean Lodge's location, ocean views, contemporary environmental design, locally sourced food, personalized service and activities, and modern spa contribute to its status as one of the premier lodges in South Australia.
The Lodge is located on the southwest coast of Kangaroo Island, Australia’s 3rd largest island, which is 15km from the shores of mainland South Australia (south of Adelaide). The location is intimate and spectacular – the lodge is perched by a secluded cliff on a rugged stretch of the Island’s coast and commands excellent views of the Southern Ocean. Over a third of the island is a conservation area or national park (Kelly Hill National Park) and as a result wildlife abounds, ensuring that guests will be able to spot numerous bird species, seals, koalas, kangaroos, sea lions, ospreys, and echidnas.
The lodge design is modern luxury integrated with the setting on the Kangaroo Island’s cliff side. Twenty-one spacious modern suites command views of the Southern Ocean. The interiors comprise a large sleeping area, a sunken lounge, a glass-walled bathroom, and an outdoor terrace with a daybed. The Ocean Premium Suite, Remarkable Suite, and Osprey Pavilion are the most spacious (each extending to 120sqm). The Finders Suite and Ocean Retreat are somewhat smaller however, both have attractive views towards the Ocean.
Dining is of a very high level at the Lodge. The ever-changing menu is international and features local produce such as South Australian grain-fed beef and Kangaroo Island chicken and lamb.
The Southern Spa is perched high on a cliff top and commands views of the Southern Ocean while offering a selection of traditional and modern treatments. The steam room and chill lounge are particularly noteworthy.
The Lodge is a 50 minute drive from the island’s airport or 90 minute drive from the ferry terminal. It takes 30 minute to fly from Adelaide (ADL) to Kangaroo Island - Kingscote (KGC) on a scheduled flight. A private transfer by plane or helicopter can be also arranged. It is also possible to drive from Adelaide and take a ferry to the Island.
Summer (December to February) and Autumn (March to May) are the best times to visit Southern Australia. In milder Autumn there is a lot of sunshine. Winter can be cold and windy on Kangaroo Island.
